Under the leadership of Artistic Director Molly Smith, Arena Stage has become the largest theater in the country dedicated to American plays and playwrights. Founded in 1950 by Zelda Fichandler, Thomas Fichandler and Edward Mangum, Arena Stage was one of the nation’s original resident theaters, and has a distinguished record of leadership and innovation in the field. With the opening of the new Mead Center for American Theater in 2010, Arena Stage will have emerged as a leading center for the production, development and study of the American theater. Now in its sixth decade, Arena Stage serves a diverse annual audience of more than 200,000.
At AFAC, we provide supplemental groceries to Arlingtonians who cannot afford to purchase all the food they need. You might not think that hunger is a problem in Arlington, but the high cost of living here means that many families simply cannot make ends meet. AFAC helps solve this problem by distributing groceries – milk, eggs, bread, canned goods, produce and other foods – to Arlington families and individuals in need. Supplemental groceries from AFAC mean that families can remain in their homes, workers can stay on the job, children are ready to learn, and mothers and babies get the nutrition they need. We have grown from being a small food provider with no permanent location to a major food pantry. We now distribute groceries to over 800 families each week.

Established in 1884, Central Union Mission is one of America's oldest social service ministries. The ministry began as an outreach to wayward men, many of them Civil War veterans, on the streets of Washington. Strong church support led the steady growth into the 21st Century enabling the Mission to purchase and later build increasingly larger facilities.

While Montgomery County is one of the most affluent, fastest growing communities in the nation, thousands of its residents are living in poverty. Housing costs have sky-rocked, while income growth in many jobs has remained the same - making the dream of homeownership almost impossible for low-income families. However, Habitat’s unique homeownership model provides a solution to this problem by offering low-income families the opportunity to purchase their own simple, decent, affordable home. Our goal is to end the cycle of poverty, instill a “can-do” attitude and show families that with the right tools, they can have the confidence and competence to maintain their own stable community.

JDRF is a leader in setting the agenda for diabetes research worldwide, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of type 1 research. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is a disease which strikes children and adults suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily or a continuous infusion of insulin through a pump. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation. Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in FY2008. In FY2008 the Foundation funded more than 1,000 centers, grants and fellowships in 22 countries.
